At the wheel of his Porsche 911 GT3 RS, the French driver took top honors in the event, which took place at the Pôle Mécanique Alès-Cévennes and mixes circuit and rally racing. After successes in 2008 and 2009, Romain Dumas once again comes out on top in an event that he holds dear.
On December 1st and 2nd, many fans turned out to witness the fifth running of the Grand Challenge. Scheduled were four runs : two on the first day, with one run at night, and starting on the circuit portion, and two the next day, this time with the start on a rally portion. Romain Dumas began the event on the right foot, signing the best time, two seconds ahead of the 2011 champion, Vincent Beltoise. Romain, Porsche factory driver, renewed his good performance on the second run, this time under darkness. On Sunday, the duel between the two drivers continuted. Second in the first session, Romain Dumas had the fastest time on the final run while Vincent Beltoise was forced to retire with mechanical woes.
« A special victory… »
« During the entire Grand Challenge, Vincent was very fast and I knew I could not make the slightest mistake » explains Romain. « I’m happy to regain the title, and it’s the first time with the Porsche 911 GT3 RS type 997. This event is always very special for me. I was born in Alès, I love this city and I grew up with the Pôle Mécanique. To win here, with my friends, in front of my family and supporters, is of course special. And to win against Vincent Beltoise, a young driver whom I appreciate and with whom I’m friends, made things even more interesting ! Bravo to him for his performance and thanks to my team who was once again perfect.. »
One week after his second place in the Rallye du Var, Romain Dumas concludes his 2012 season on a high note. « This time, it really was the last race of the season » he said, with a smile. « I’m obviously happy to finish with a victory, but it was the weekend in general that was so enjoyable. I’ve never seen so many people at the Pôle Mécanique and I’m very happy for all the folks who work there every day of the year. On the sporting side, I know the track very well, but curiously, along with the team, we learned yet more things about the car. We’re always looking to progress, and that attitude pleases me. »
Romain turns his attention now to the Porsche Motorsport Night of Champions then on to preparations for 2013. Romain Dumas concludes : « I’ve said it before, 2012 was a year rich in challenges. There were good moments and others less so. There were moments of discovery, such as Pikes Peak and the WRC Rally de France. There was also a return to an old favorites, such as Petit Le Mans, and all of these experiences bring a lot to me. Now I’m looking forward to 2013, a season that will, I’m sure, be very exciting. »
