Rallye de France : Romain Dumas shines in the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0l « RGT » !
In his third participation in the Rallye de France (October 2-5), third to last round of the World Rally Championship, Romain Dumas accomplished his mission. While making his debut in the « RGT » class in the brand new Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0l, entered by his own team and developed by RD Limited, the French driver took class honours and finished 19th in the overall classication with co-driver Denis Giraudet. It’s also the best result for an RGT car in the World Rally Championship !
« The best RGT result on the world stage for the 911 GT3 RS 4.0l debut ! »
Following a shakedown on Thursday that served as a dress rehearsal, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0l « RGT » made its competition debut on Friday during the first leg of the rally. Romain dominated his class on five of the seven stages to finish the day 18th overall, with a solid 14th scratch time on SS4. Another interesting note, Romain improved on his time on the Pays d’Ormont stage, the longest of the rally, from last year’s efforts in a WRC !
The next day, and despite two broken wheels in SS9, the Frenchman continue to widen the gap in the morning over his RGT rival, François Delecour. Following and off from Delecour in the afternoon, Romain continued to push. Avoiding mistakes on a difficult surface, he was still among the top 20 following the last pass in Mulhouse.
Starting the final leg in 19th position, Romain would hold the position, remaining vigilant under difficult conditions. The performance over 18 special stages gave Romain Dumas, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0l and the RD Rallye Team, the RGT victory and the best finish ever from this type on the world stage !
« This result is of course positive » admits Romain. « We developed the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0l in record time and reaching the finish was a goal in itself. We had no problems with reliability, which shows the quality of the preparation from the team. In terms of performance, it’s what we expected. We not only were consistently ahead of the other Porsche in this class, but we ran amongst the WRC2 entries, which is promising for a car that we are just now discovering, let’s not forget that. The Rallye de France is still as complete as ever, with faster sections and tighter ones…but there was one constant : I pushed a lot and really enjoyed myself ! Once again the team really worked well. We know there are still things we can improve upon but for a first outing, it’s a success. The RGT class victory was a legitimate goal, while the top 20 overall finish is very gratifying. To give the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0l the best result of its kind so far is a good reward for the team. »
While Romain Dumas will head to Japan in a few days for the 6 Hours of Fuji in the FIA World Endurance Championship, the RD Limited staff will head straight to l’Île de Beauté where several Porsches will be overseen as they compete in the Tour de Corsica historics rally.
