Romain Dumas shows off the competitiveness of the 911 GT3 RS 4.0l !
Following a marked performance in the Ypres Rally, Romain Dumas once again showed the pace of his Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0l, developed by RD Limited. Taking the leadership of the FIA R-GT class from the very first stage in his debut start at Rally Germany, in the middle of wine country, he wasn’t satisfied with dominating fellow competitor François Delecour’s Porsche. Romain was consistently among the other WRC2 drivers, regularly classified in the top 20 overall. An impressive performance considering the unique characteristics of the rally.
With victory in the FIA R-GT class his main objective, Romain concentrated on the mission at hand and solidified his lead in the category. As his lead grew, his risk-taking was reduced accordingly. And although the first day of the rally was a good beginning, the second proved to be more challenging, with roads even less suitabale to the Porsche’s characteristics. The French driver lost several minutes following a puncture, which plagued many other competitors as well, then issues with the front bonnet closure further slowed the pair.
Under these conditions, and as victory in FIA R-GT was all but certain, Romain assured his position as leader, preserving his 25th place overall (good enough for a top 10 in WRC2). The result was particularly sweet as the German round of the WRC was especially hard on the cars and competitors.
« Rally Germany is certainly one of the toughest rallies I’ve ever competed in, but the result and the overall performance from everyone were positive » he explains. « In terms of pure performance, we showed that we can run among the WRC2 class cars, even if it required a big push. We dominated our class and that was our primary goal, but we’re also happy to reach the finish line : the roads were really hard on our Porsche, which isn’t used to such an environment. As a result, I think the team learn a lot. We can take away a lot of new ideas from this round, perhaps even more than I though possible at the start. »
In addition to the good result, Romain Dumas enjoyed the event and weekend in general. « The atmosphere was excellent, with lots of fans, including my factory Porsche teammate Timo Bernhard » he explains. « To see so many fans of Porsche and GT in general was great and I think it shows the interest around R-GT. I was also excited to have this special livery that recalled all of the most important Porsches of my career. It was a cool idea and I think people enjoyed it. And on a few special stages, we really had great fun. So, overall there are many reasons to be happy. »
Romain Dumas will likely make one or two more rally appearances this year. Details of his participations will be revealed in the coming weeks.
