Daytona 24 Hours

The first event of Romain’s year did not match the expectations he had when he signed up to compete in the Daytona 24 Hours race. He was teamed with Patrick Long and Jorg Bergmeister, regulars in the Grand-Am championship for the Alex Job Racing Team.

The mechanical problems which struck the team during the first part of the race prevented the AJR Porsche Crawford No 23 from showing its real potential. And during the second part heavy rain fell, sometimes quite violently. Romain however had been looking forward to the rain as he hoped it would be a chance to make up some places, which he successfully did during his double stint at the wheel. The driver from Alès had never driven a car in damp conditions at Daytona before but his consistency brought the No 23 car back up to seventh place. But then in the last 8 hours Bergmeister had an off after being caught out by a wet portion of the track. The damage to the car was quite serious and the repairs in the pits took a long time. The mechanics who had already had a lot of work to do in the first part of the race now had to replace most of the left rear corner of the car. The No 23 car plummeted down the order lists again of course. When it finally left the pits, there was little hope of catching the leaders so the team could only hope to get the car to the finish without further damage and try to pick up some points.

After 615 laps, the fastest being 1’45.007”, the Team Alex Job Racing Porsche Crawford No 23 crossed the line in 12th place in their class and 18th overall.
On his return to Europe, Romain will take part in an intensive physical training session in Cyprus in order to get ready for the 2007 American Le Mans Series.
