Romain Dumas and Porsche triumph in the WRC at the Grand Challenge of Alès!

The 2008 season had not quite finished for Romain Dumas before the first weekend of December. This Sunday, Romain, himself originally from Alès, took part in the inaugural edition of the Grand Challenge, a unique event contested over 3 rounds on a special 4.2 km track using elements of both the race circuit and the rally track at the Pôle Mécanique in Alès. Each driver, including the double ALMS champion and his competitors, drove the track three times, including once at night. Up against WRC cars much more suitable to this event, Romain created a sensation when he was fastest in the first round. In the second round, he set a new fastest time and this gave him a lead of 8.44" after the first two runs. On his last run, he increased this lead even more and gave a great show of both panache and pace.
So he became the first winner of this unique competition in his home region and Romain himself was surprised by his performance. "I came here just for some fun, because I thought it would be impossible to beat the WRC cars. But somehow we did it! I am very proud to score another victory with Porsche this season, especially as I am just a few miles away from where my parents live. After the Porsche dinner last Saturday evening in Stuttgart, I drove down to Alès overnight so I could take part in the first running of this prestigious race and to compete against great drivers. The car was very well prepared and it was a great pleasure to beat the Rallye cars" said Romain as he prepared to fly back to the USA on Monday morning for more tests with his new Grand-Am project.
